Many of my books are about animals and nature. From the time I was very small I read and studied anything I could find about plants and animals. I had many pets and loved to hike and camp. Even now our house is home to several animals: my dog, Kalie; our resident amphibian, Newtsie; and many turtles whose names are too many to mention. (Hopefully they don't feel slighted by the omission).

Other books of mine are about history. I didn't particularly like history when I was a kid, but I have since discovered the adventure, mystery, and amazing people that can be found in the past if we go looking for it. Doing the research is like being a detective, and the journey toward completing a book is always chock full of interesting characters, places, and experiences. In the end that is exactly what I want to give the reader.

In addition to writing and illustrating, I am a founding member of the Children's Author's Network! (CAN!) and a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). I also conduct school and library presentations, teacher in-service workshops, and have taught how to write and illustratie children's books.

My best advice to anyone who wants to write children's books is, of course, to write everyday and READ!
